In this day-long workshop we will be exploring three of the central craft elements of writing powerful fiction:
Character, Dialogue, and Setting.
We will examine both the traditional landscapes of realistic fiction as well as look at the world-building techniques you can use to write speculative fiction, fantasy, and sci-fi.
We will also dive deep into the lives of the characters who inhabit your fictional worlds: Who are they? What do they sound like? What are their innermost thoughts and the secrets they carry in their hearts?
In the process we will write a lot, experiment with style and voice, and talk about how to keep your creativity flourishing and complete the projects you've started.
All levels of abilities and writing backgrounds are welcomed, from beginners to published writers.

16:30-17:30: Public reading. Alexander reads from Efter Yang followed by Q&A (free for masterclass-participants) and book signing.
The teaching is in English, but you are welcome to write in Danish if you prefer. Alexander also speaks Danish and will be able to give feedback in Danish too!

Remember to bring writing accessories such as pen & paper, notebook and/or laptop. There are plenty of cords in the room.

Your instructor:
Alexander Weinstein is the author of the short story collections, Universal Love and Children of the New World, which was chosen as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and a best book of the year by NPR, Google, and Electric Literature.
His fiction and interviews have appeared in Rolling Stone, World Literature Today, Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy, and Best American Experimental Writing.
He is a recipient of a Sustainable Arts Foundation Award, and has been awarded the Lamar York, Gail Crump, Hamlin Garland, and New Millennium Prizes.
His short story "Saying Goodbye to Yang" was adapted into the critically acclaimed feature film After Yang with Colin Farrell in the leading role.
Alexander is the Founder & Director of The Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing.
Alexander teaches at our skriverejse/writing retreat in Cirali, Turkey in June 2024.
